"Red Callender Speaks Low"

This is a VERY interesting and musical album! Red Callendar was one of the first black musicians to break into the LA studio scene after cutting his teeth on bass and tuba with the likes of Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Nat Cole, Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon and many other legendary jazz luminaries.

According to jazz historian Leonard Feather, this 1957 release was the first album to feature JAZZ TUBA as the central instrument on an entire album. Red's playing is solidly melodic and he is very much his own man as he interprets some great jazz classics.

Red is joined by Vince De Rosa and Irving Rosenthal playing some great jazz French horn, the Tonight Show's Bob Bain on guitar, Bill Douglass on drums, Red Mitchell on bass, and Buddy Collette on flute and clarinet. This is a swinging and enjoyable album featuring some of the great studio musicians of the '50's!
