This unique BINAURAL recording features The Black Dogs really stretching out on some classic tunes. We did this recording for a company called Naturasound and, like all binaural recordings, it is best appreciated with headphones.
Naturasound's Matt Susskind purchased a skull from a medical supply house and spent over a year in England with a surgeon and forensic pathologist reconstructing the young woman's head with surgical grade silicone.
Muscles, tendons, brain matter, eyes, skin etc. were all meticulously reconstructed, the entire process costing in excess of $30,000.00! The goal was to replicate the density and acoustic characteristics of the human head. B&K microphones were implanted where the ear drums would have been and the completed head (with eyes closed, thankfully) was given human hair, ear rings, makeup and attached to a neck and shoulders.
The final look was astonishingly realistic: a lovely young woman with jet black hair, dressed in a stylish black turtleneck sweater. With her closed eyes, she appeared to be listening intently to the music. The completed head was mounted on a rotating spindle operated remotely, so it could turn to "listen" to whatever was happening. It was uncanny to be taking a solo and have the head turn to follow the action!
Featuring the original Black Dogs (Steve Yocum, Jim Buchmann, Davy Jones, Tom Hook, Bob Leary, Eddie Metz, Jr. and David Gannett), the extended cuts on this album include:
The Chant
Borneo
Save the Bones for Henry Jones
Whinin' Boy
Canal Street Blues
Created from a cassette recording, this album demonstrates the typical "bleed through" one can expect from that medium, though overall sound quality is superb.
