Now Playing:  "Barnum and Bailey's Favorite" from "Circus", Merle Evans conducting
Great find! This album was originally released as a four record (78's) set in 1941 and features Merle Evans with his circus band of that season - and when you hear it, you'll realize these guys are SERIOUS!!!

While I haven't been able to obtain corraboration just yet, that year would almost certainly make the tuba section Harvey Phillips (as a youngster) and Johnny Evans, whom Harvey declared "The most amazing tuba player I've ever known!" That's saying quite a lot coming from the King Himself!

The sound quality is remarkably good for 78's and, as always, having been rendered from vinyl, this MP3 download possesses warmth, presence, and the occasional surface noise. The songs are presented in live circus fashion, complete with ringmaster whistles, chords and seques.

You'll see Lions and Tigers and Bears as you enjoy:

Ringling Brothers Grand Entry (Sweet)

Symphonia March (Evans) / The Big Cage (Karl King)

Barnum and Bailey's Favorite (Karl King)

High Ridin' (Paulson) / Jungle Queen (Barnard) / Roses of Memory ( by tubist Fred Jewell) / Stop It! (Kaufman)

Old King Cole Medley March (arr. Evans)

Olympia Hippodrome (Alexander) / Go (Huff)

Royal Decree (English)

Fosterettes March (Ventre) / Spring Beautiful Spring ( Lincke) / Broadway One-Step (Karl King)
